Getting an Event Icon Onto the Home Screen, No Native App Behind It

A Swoogo event microsite converted into an installable, home-screen app — manifest, service worker, and icons, no native app build required.

The problem

This event runs its own Swoogo microsite, separate from the two events already running bespoke agenda widgets for the same client. Attendees wanted the schedule one tap away from their home screen. Building a native app for an event that runs once a year is a hard cost to justify.

The approach / solution

  • Converted the event’s existing Swoogo microsite into an installable progressive web app: a web app manifest, a service worker, and app icons.
  • Attendees can add the event site to their home screen directly from the browser. No app-store listing, no separate download.
  • Built directly against the microsite already holding the event’s registration and schedule data, so there’s no second copy of that data to keep in sync.

Outcome / result

The converted microsite runs live for this event, installable straight from the browser. It’s a scoped build — manifest, service worker, and icons — not the fuller offline-and-push version we’ve delivered elsewhere in our Swoogo PWA work; this one answers the specific ask, which was a home-screen icon.

Why it matters for enterprise event-tech

An event that runs once a year rarely earns back the cost of a native app shipped to two app stores. A PWA conversion gets the same home-screen presence off a microsite the client already owns and maintains.
